Rescue Dogs Trained to Assist Individuals With Disabilities

Psychiatric and Autism Service Dogs

These dogs are trained to support individuals in both home and public environments, by performing specific tasks.

Emotional Support Dogs

Well-adjusted dogs trained to provide companionship and enhance emotional well-being in the home (not in public), though they are not task-trained like service dogs. Our emotional support dogs will be housebroken and trained on a variety of basic manners skills so that they are truly emotionally supportive.

Facility Dogs

Dogs trained to assist in professional settings like schools, therapy centers, or nursing homes, providing calming and therapeutic support. These dogs have a handler that is a staff member at one of these facilities and the dog accompanies their handler to work on a regular basis.

Therapy Dogs

Specially trained dogs that provide emotional and comfort and support to individuals in hospitals, schools, or care facilities. These dogs have a handler that volunteers their time occasionally to visit these facilities.

Our Unique Program

Welcome to Lana’s Legacy, a program dedicated to transforming rescue dogs into highly trained psychiatric and autism assistance dogs. Inspired by the bond between Lauren and her first service dog, Lana, we believe that shelter dogs can make a profound difference in the lives of individuals facing mental health challenges.

Lana’s Legacy is committed to:

  • Adopting and training rescue dogs to become service animals for individuals with psychiatric conditions or autism.

  • Providing affordable assistance dogs, ensuring access to life-changing support at a lower-than-market price.

  • Giving shelter dogs a second chance to make a meaningful impact in their new roles.

At Lana’s Legacy, we’re committed to keeping service dogs accessible. While many other programs charge over $20,000 for a fully trained assistance dog, our program offers dogs at a more affordable price range that is typically between $2,500 to $10,000. We also actively support families in fundraising to help cover costs, ensuring more people can benefit from the life-changing support of an assistance dog.

We accept funding through Wisconsin Medicaid Waivers such as IRIS and CLTS.

Application Process

The application process for a Lana’s Legacy assistance dog is straightforward and designed to help us find the best match for each individual. The form is brief, and if you're applying for an Emotional Support Animal (ESA), a prescription from a healthcare provider is required. While submitting an application does not guarantee placement with a dog, we carefully review each submission to ensure the right fit. If you have any accessibility issues with the form, feel free to reach out to us for assistance. Our team will guide you through the next steps, including interviews and consultations, to assess your needs and readiness for a dog.
