“Read With Me” at Shorewood Public Library
Our therapy dogs are proud to participate in the ongoing "Read With Me" sessions at Shorewood Public Library. There is no better way to kick off summer reading than by joining our therapy dog teams! This program is designed for children in grades 5K- 5th grade, creating a
calm, encouraging environment where young readers can practice their reading skills while spending time with a certified therapy dog in a calm and encouraging environment.
Our therapy dogs offer a friendly, nonjudgmental presence that helps children feel comfortable while reading aloud. This unique experience is especially beneficial for young readers who may be struggling with reading or feel shy about reading in front of others. The best part about therapy dogs? They do not judge–therapy dogs simply listen without correcting mistakes, children often feel more relaxed and willing to take on challenging words and passages.
Reading aloud regularly helps build important literacy skills such as word recognition, decoding, pronunciation, and reading fluency. When reading to a therapy dog, children are often more motivated to keep going, strengthening both their skills and their confidence along the way.
We are grateful to partner with Shorewood Public Library to support young readers in our community and look forward to many more stories, smiles, and puppy kisses during future Read With Me sessions!
